On Wednesday, OpenAI, the AI research firm, announced the reinstatement of ousted Sam Altman the CEO , bringing an end to the crisis that initiated with his termination by the board of directors on November 17.
OpenAI, based in San Francisco, revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that they have reached an agreement in principle for Sam Altman to resume his role as CEO. The new initial board will consist of Bret Taylor as Chair, along with Larry Summers and Adam D’Angelo. Collaborative efforts are underway to finalize the details, and OpenAI expressed gratitude for the patience during this period.
In response to these developments, Altman shared on X: “I love OpenAI, and everything I’ve done over the past few days has been in service of keeping this team and its mission together. When I decided to join Microsoft on Sunday evening, it was clear that was the best path for me and the team. With the new board and Satya’s support, I’m looking forward to returning to OpenAI and building on our strong partnership with Microsoft.”
Notably, Greg Brockman, who had resigned as OpenAI President in protest of Altman’s removal, is also making a comeback.
Microsoft, holding the largest stake in OpenAI, had hired Altman following his removal, and Brockman joined him at the tech giant led by Satya Nadella.
Altman’s removal had sparked a significant response, with over 500 OpenAI employees, constituting approximately 65% of its 770-strong workforce, threatening to resign and move to Microsoft if Altman was not reinstated.
