WASHINGTON (US) – Alphabet Inc’s Google announced on Friday that it would prevent websites and apps using its advertising technology from carrying ads on “dangerous content” that goes against scientific consensus during spread of the pandemic.
Google, which is the world’s largest search engine, updated its policy in the wake of the pandemic surging through the US. Digital advertisers like Google and Facebook have been urged to introduce strict measures to prevent the spread of misinformation.
The firm said in a statement that conspiracy theories such as the virus was created in a China lab to be used as a biological weapon, that Microsoft founder Bill Gates created it will not be allowed.
The search engine has already clamped down on ads that carry harmful content such as “miracle” cures or which promote the anti-vaccination movement.
