WASHINGTON – On Friday, U.S. trade regulators are looking into investigating wearable monitoring devices like Fitbit and Garmin after allegations of violations regarding patent from rival Koninklijke Philips and its North America unit.
In a statement, the U.S. International Trade Commission said that the probe shall also look at devices made by Ingram Micro Inc, Maintek Computer and Inventec Appliances.
In the complaint, Philips in the Netherlands and North America called for an import ban or tariffs. They allege that the other companies infringed their patents and misappropriated their intellectual property.
Fitbit responded to the allegations saying that they believe the claims are without merit and was probably a result of Philips’ failure to succeed in the market of wearables.
The popularity of wearable activity trackers among consumers who want to track physical activity and health metrics is increasing.
