Copyright Trial
The ‘Shape of You’ singer had played his guitar and sang Thinking Out Loud in Manhattan federal court last Thursday. This was during the trial over whether Ed Sheeran copied Marvin Gaye’s classic Let’s Get It On. The 32-year-old was sued by the heirs of songwriter Ed Townsend, Gaye’s co-writer on the 1973 song. He played the chord progression and sang the opening words.
He had also said a video that showed he had segued on stage between “Thinking Out Loud” and “Let’s Get It On” was not unusual. Sheeran added it was “quite simple to weave in and out of songs” that are in the same key.
The trial is expected to resume on Monday.
