Disney unveiled a fresh glimpse into the highly-anticipated sequel to the 2016 hit Moana , Moana 2 , with a brand-new image shared on X, formerly Twitter, early Wednesday. In the picture, the now-matured titular princess confidently holds an oar as she sails, her expression exuding triumph. While much of Moana 2 remains shrouded in secrecy, fans can mark their calendars for its theatrical release scheduled for this November.
This latest still for the upcoming animated sequel made its debut during Disney’s 2024 annual shareholders meeting. Initially, the company had plans to reintroduce Moana to audiences through a Disney+ TV series. However, in a February announcement, Disney revealed its decision to embark on a second cinematic journey instead.
Moana 2, directed by Dave Derrick Jr., will feature music by Abigail Barlow, Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina. The film is slated for its premiere on November 27. The project tantalizingly introduced “Walt Disney Animation Studios’ epic animated musical Moana 2 takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui, and a fresh crew of unlikely seafarers.”
Alongside the new image reveal, Disney officially confirmed the return of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Disney CEO Bob Iger announced during the meeting that the WWE star, along with Auli’i Cravalho, will reprise their roles as Maui and Moana, respectively, in Moana 2. Notably, The Rock will also portray Maui in the live-action rendition of the film, alongside another actress taking on the role of Moana.
