NEW YORK (US) – Theatres in Broadway will remain closed until May 30 next year, said the Broadway League industry group on Friday, extending the lockdown that has already devastated the sector.
The League said in a statement that dates for each returning and the new show will be announced as individual productions chart out their programme.
The Actors’ Equity Association, which is a Broadway actors’ union, said the decision to close the theatres was “difficult but responsible”.
Mary McColl, executive director for the union, called upon the federal government to sanction health insurance subsidies, renewed unemployment benefits and arts funding in a bid to help its members survive the crisis as they have been unemployed since March.
When the pandemic struck as many as 31 Broadway shows were in production. Producers of some shows such as the stage musical version of the Disney film “Frozen,” have made it clear that they will not open.
