LONDON (UK) – Culture minister Oliver Dowden said on Sunday that the British government wants university students to be able to sent home for Christmas. This has come amid concerns that strict lockdown measures may be required to control the rising number of coronavirus cases.
Students, who are staying far from home have been left with no choice but to pay thousands of pounds for accommodation and teaching.
Dowden told, “I very much want students to be able to go home at Christmas.”
“We’re three months away from Christmas. We’ve announced a range of measures. We are constantly keeping this situation under review.”
Some of the government’s own lawmakers are pushing for parliament to have a clear stand with regard to COVID restrictions. This includes an amendment being pushed by prominent lawmakers Graham Brady and Steve Baker..
The opposition Labour Party’s culture spokeswoman Jo Stevens told Sky News, “If it’s selected, I think that the likelihood is that we would back it.”
