LOS ANGELES (US) – Korean pop band BTS made it to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 singles charts in the US on Monday. It becomes the first Korean pop act to debut at No. 1.
According to Nielsen Music data, “Dynamite”, which is the first all-English single from the seven-member boy band, clocked 33.9 million US streams and 300,000 sales in its first week. Three years since Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” in September 2017, the Korean band has scored the biggest digital sales week.
The members of the band thanked fans on Twitter and in reply to a congratulatory message from South Korean President Moon Jae-in, they said the song was aimed at rejuvenating cities across the world.
“It’s a difficult time, but I hope our songs can give you a little comfort and positive energy,” the group posted on Twitter.
The president said the pop band was “writing a new chapter in K-pop history”, and their song was meaningful as it brought a message of hope and cheer to people around the globe who are struggling with the pandemic.
BTS was formed in 2013 and it has brought the K-Pop craze into the US over the past three years with their catchy numbers.
With his viral hit ‘Gangnam Style’ in 2012, South Korean solo artist PSY managed to reach the number two position in the Hot 100 best.
On Sunday, the band performed at the MTV Video Music Awards show for the first time and bagged four trophies, including one for the best group and best pop group.
