WASHINGTON (US) – Lanes at select ports of entry at the border with Mexico were closed on Friday and secondary checks will be enhanced to curb non-essential travel and the spread of coronavirus, said a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) official.
Though non-essential travel has been restricted at the border since March, US citizens and permanent residents can still enter the country from Mexico. The new curbs are targeted at those travellers, said the official.
President Donald Trump had taken a series of steps to scale back immigration during the outbreak of coronavirus, including emergency border rules allowing authorities to quickly deport illegal migrants who are arrested at the border.
