Algeria is currently grappling with a devastating wildfire crisis, as raging flames have claimed the lives of 25 people. Including 10 courageous soldiers who were battling the inferno in the face of high winds and scorching summer temperatures. The calamitous situation has prompted the evacuation of at least 1,500 people from affected regions, according to government ministries.
The Interior Ministry confirmed 15 deaths and 24 injuries, while the Defence Ministry later reported the tragic loss of 10 soldiers. With an additional 25 were injured during their heroic efforts to contain the flames in the resort area of Beni Ksila, east of the capital Algiers. Specific details on the period in which these casualties occurred have not been disclosed. However, the wildfires have been relentlessly burning for several days.
The North African country has been struck by a staggering 97 blazes. Spreading rapidly through forests and agricultural areas in 16 different regions. The hardest-hit areas include Bejaia and Jijel in the Kabyle region, east of Algiers, and Bouira, located approximately 100 kilometres (60 miles) southeast of the capital.
The Mediterranean Region in Crisis
To combat the disastrous wildfire, the government of Algeria has deployed around 7,500 firefighters and 350 trucks on the ground, with the crucial assistance of air support. Despite their relentless efforts, the situation remains critical and challenging to control.
Unfortunately, Algeria has experienced recurring summer wildfires over the years. Last August, 37 lives were lost in wildfires near the northern border with Tunisia. Additionally, a year prior, numerous fatalities were reported during fires in the mountainous Kabyle region. Soldiers were called in to support firefighting efforts in the vicinity of local villages.
