DUBAI – Construction work on the site for the International Horticultural Expo 2023 Doha is on track and is set to open on schedule ahead of the staging of the event in Qatar from 2 October 2023 to 28 March 2024. Speaking today at Expo 2020 Dubai, officials said the event aims to leave a legacy of boosting research and development focused on greening the desert.
The region’s first horticultural expo to be held under the aegis of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), the event is expected to attract 80 countries, as well as international organisations, cities, independent companies and NGOs.
Sharing an update at Expo 2020 Dubai, Mohammed Ali Al Khoury, Secretary-General of the Doha event, said: “By hosting this edition of the International Horticultural Expo, we aim to enhance international cooperation in environmental and cultural issues, combat desertification and reduce carbon emissions, especially in industrialised countries. Construction work on the site is in full swing, and we are on track to get it ready on schedule.”
The International Horticultural Expo 2023 Doha comes at a time when one third of the world’s land surface is threatened by desertification. Arid land area increases by 12 million hectares each year, making it a global environmental problem. The goal of the Expo is to promote a prosperous green life in the desert through international collaboration in climate, water and soil sustainability.
The event, themed ‘Green Desert, Better Environment’, was originally scheduled to be held in October 2021, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event has four sub-themes: Modern Agriculture, Technology and Innovation, Environmental Awareness and Sustainability.
