SEOUL (SOUTH KOREA) – South Korean health authorities said there were 631 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, the highest tally in nine months. This comes ahead of a government decision on whether to intensify the social distancing restrictions. Health authorities are struggling to stem the spread of the third wave of outbreaks.
Curbs were tightened on Saturday and the government will take a decision on Sunday regarding whether to impose newer measures.
With the new infections, the tally of cases has climbed to 37,546, with 545 fatalities, said the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency.
A big chunk of the new cases is centred around Seoul where unprecedented curfews were imposed on Saturday and most establishments remained closed from 9 pm onwards. Public transportation operations will be cut back by 30% in the evenings. This will continue for two weeks.
