HONG KONG (HONG KONG) – A Hong Kong court again rejected bail on Tuesday to the first person charged for triggering seperatism and terrorism under a new security law in the Chinese-ruled city.
Tong Ying-kit, 23, had carried a sign reading “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times,” and was seen driving his motorbike into police officers, before getting arrested, police have said.
Tong was among more than 300 demonstrators who raised their voice against the new law, who were arrested by police on July 1.
He was denied bail last month, after which a release was sought from detention via a habeas corpus, indicating whether a detention is lawful. However, that application was rejected on Friday.
His bail application was also rejected by High Court Judge Alex Lee.
The national security law has received criticism in the West for damaging basic rights and freedoms.
