MAHAD (INDIA) – Families were seen shouting names of their relatives, who were trapped under a collapsed building in western India on Tuesday.
At least two people were killed and 18 injured when a five storey building was reduced to ruins in Mahad, an industrial town near Mumbai, which is the country’s financial capital, on Monday.
More than 90 people were stuck under the debris, and at least 60 are now being rescued.
The building comprised of 47 flats, said a police official at the disaster site, adding that legal action will be taken against the builder.
Shabana Lora, a female survivor, said she managed to run out of the building with her three daughters when the incident took place. “We had just fled a few metres from the building and we heard lord noise. Then there was smoke everywhere, the building was collapsed in a few seconds after we ran out.”
Other survivors said at least 18 people were yet to be found.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday in a tweet said the incident was saddening and he prayed the injured to recover.
The cause of the accident was not however, not clear.
