MADRID (SPAIN) – Authorities in the country’s autonomous region of Catalonia on Sunday urged more than 96,000 people in three towns to remain at home as the number of COVID-19 infections is rising.
On Friday, four million people in the region, including Barcelona, its capital, were told to stay at home.
On Sunday, authorities came out with a statement telling residents of Figueres and Vilafant, in the province of Girona, and Sant Feliu de Llobregat, near Barcelona, to remain at home except for emergency situations.
Catalan authorities on Saturday said there was daily spike of 1,226 cases.
This order comes short of a lockdown. It is the strictest to be taken since the restrictions across the country were lifted last month.
The new curbs also include a ban on gatherings of more than ten people. Though bars and restaurants will be allowed to open, they will have to restrict capacity to 50 per cent and enforce a 2-metre distance between tables outside.
