LONDON – UK Royal Mint issued its first commemorative coin with a British rock band as a tribute to the late Freddie Mercury and Queen’s three other band members.
Queen’s lead guitarist Brian May, the one-ounce silver proof coin in hand, called it a “who would’ve thought” moment.
For the first time ever, the coin features Queen Elizabeth on one side and Queen on the other. All banknotes and coins bear the monarch’s head.
On Monday, the coin features the logo of the band and the instruments played by the members- Freddie Mercury’s Bechstein grand piano for Bohemian Rhapsody, May’s guitar from Red Special, Roger Taylor’s bass drum and John Deacon’s precision bass.
Chris Facey designed the coin and he made sure to pay a tribute to ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ with the piano keys pressed down for the song’s opening notes.
The coin is available in silver and gold proof with prices from 13 pounds for a Ā£5 Brilliant uncirculated coin cover up to Ā£2,100 for the one-ounce gold proof coin.
The coin is the Royal Mint’s first release as part of their “Music Legends” series.
