SEOUL (SOUTH KOREA) – There were as many as 641 new coronavirus infections in South Korea on Friday, the lowest daily tally in 32 days. Authorities attribute it to the tough curbs during the New Year holiday season.
The infections went down from 674 on Thursday and 870 a day earlier. Authorities said the trend of gradual slump in the number of cases is likely to go on.
According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, the number of cases remains at 67,999 with 1,100 COVID-19 fatalities.
“The spreading of infections has passed the peak and it looks like we’re seeing a gradual stabilisation,” Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said in a press briefing. “But given the speed of infections spreading in the third wave, we can see it worsening at any time.”
On Monday, the nation extended a ban on private gatherings bigger than four people and prolonged social distancing norms in greater Seoul.
