LONDON (UK) – Princess Anne marked her 70th birthday on Saturday with a low-profile celebration. It is something that befits the hardest-working member of the royal family as the pandemic forced a gathering to be cancelled.
The only daughter of Queen Elizabeth, she competed in equestrianism at the Olympics and once survived a kidnapping bid. Princess Anne is known for her charity activities and has continued to thank medics and support charities during the lockdown.
For her birthday, the royal family released three official portraits of Anne at her residence of Gatcombe Park.
Clicked by the high profile lensman John Swannell, two pictures show the princess in formal attire while a third depicts her outside in the countryside.
Her son-in-law Mike Tindall, who is a former England rugby player, told the BBC this week that plans for a gathering in Scotland had been scaled back because of a local lockdown.
“It is a shame. I’m sure we will do something as a family to celebrate her 70 amazing years,” he said. “She’s just an incredible woman in terms of how much work she can get through in the year.”
In 1974, she survived a kidnapping attempt near Buckingham Palace when a man stopped her car and shot at those trying to intervene. When the attacker told her to get out of the car, Anne replied “Not bloody likely” and managed to get away as the police arrived.
