NUR-SULTAN – On Sunday, authorities reported that two more people died from wounds which they sustained from the ethnic clashes in southern Kazakhstan on February 7th bringing the total death toll to 10.
The clashes were triggered by an argument over right of way between the ethnic Kazakhs and Dungans which was then followed by an overnight rampage wherein an enraged crowd torched several buildings and cars.
140 people sustained injuries and sought medical attention after the clashes and 25 more went to Kyrgyzstan to seek medical care. Many Dungans, a minority group with Chinese roots, fled to Kyrgyzstan after the violence.
On Sunday, Deputy Interior Minister Alexei Kalaichidi reported that many people remained in detention while the police established their roles in the incident.
A number of people were also being investigated by police of spreading hate speech using these clashes.
