NEW DELHI (DELHI) – According to the latest data, as the outbreak shows no signs of coronavirus receding, India has surpassed Russia with the world’s third-highest number of cases recorded, at nearly 700,000.
Health ministry data reported more than 23,000 new cases in the previous 24 hours, which was slightly down from Sunday’s record increase of almost 25,000.
The first case was detected in January, since then there have been almost 20,000 deaths in India.
With this, India is now the world’s third worst-affected country, behind only the United States and Brazil.
When compared to China, where the virus originated last year, it has been eight times the number of cases in India as the former. Both countries have similar-sized population.
Officials said they had changed a decision to reopen Taj Mahal, India’s most famous tourist attraction, in the city of Agra, New Delhi, on Monday, after an increase of cases in the area.
