DUBAI (UAE) – According to an Iranian official, Tehran and the head of the UN atomic energy watchdog will issue a joint statement on nuclear cooperation. International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Rafael Grossi is in Iran seeking permission for his inspectors to access two suspected former nuclear sites.
“With the agreement reached, the legal and technical approach will be further strengthened in the continuation of cooperation between the two sides,” the official told Iran’s Nournews website.
“The joint statement will be published simultaneously in Tehran and Vienna within hours.”
Iranian nuclear agency chief Ali Akbar Salehi indicated on Tuesday that talks with Grossi were productive. This means Tehran could grant permission to the inspectors to visit the suspected sites after a months-long impasse.
The IAEA suspects that the sites could still contain undeclared nuclear material, or traces of it.
“Iran hopes the UN Security Council members will not allow America to…intimidate Council members and violate international law,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh told state TV.
