LONDON (UK) – The Financial Times has reported that the government has given up hopes of striking a US free trade deal ahead of the presidential election. Officials blame the pandemic for slow progress in reaching an agreement, the report said.
“Is it going to happen this year? Basically, no,” the FT quoted an official as saying. “We don’t want to be bounced into a deal.”
Last month, trade minister Liz Truss said there was no deadline to strike a trade deal and she blamed Washington for talking “a good game” on free trade while putting curbs on import access.
