NEW YORK (US) – Fifth seed Alexander Zverev of Germany recovered from a shaky start to secure a brilliant 3-6 2-6 6-3 6-4 6-3 semi-final win in the US Open over Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta on Friday. He is securing his entry into the finals for the first time.
Before the tourney began, organisers held an event to commemorate the September 11 attacks with Broadway singer Christopher Jackson performing in front of a display for Black Lives Matter inside Arthur Ashe Stadium.
By committing 36 errors, Zverev looked as if he was headed for disaster in the first two sets. But he used he gained momentum during the rest of the game.
“I knew that I had to come up with better tennis and I knew that I had to be more stable … but I am through to my first Grand Slam final and that’s all that matters,” said Zverev.
After the German levelled the match at two sets apiece Busta took a medical break to have his back tended to.
Busta was locked in early as he held at love to open the match, turned aside a break point on his next service game. He broke twice for a 5-1 lead before securing the first set.
In the second set, things got going in the Spaniard’s way as he surged ahead with three consecutive breaks for a 5-0 lead during the set, which witnessed the German committing 22 errors.
But he bounced back in the next two sets as he broke Busta four times.
