Here’s a quick summary of what has happened around the world over the last 24 hours, brought to you exclusively by British Herald.
What’s more British than the British? Apparently, Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. Prince Harry and wife Meghan have settled, for now, into a seaside home near the most royal of Canadian cities- Victoria- named after a queen who reigned until 1901, during a great expansion of the British Empire.
British Prince Charles paid homage to his grandmother Princess Alice for offering shelter to Jews in Greece when it was Nazi-occupied. He added that the royal family took pride in the honour of Princess Alice’s heroism in the Holocaust, bestowed by Israel. Prince Charles addressed the Holocaust memorial ceremony in Jerusalem and the forum was attended by over 40 world leaders.
The bill which implements the Brexit deal officially became law ahead of Britain’s departure from the bloc on January 31st. On Wednesday, the legislation passed the final parliamentary stage after a three-year struggle on how and if Brexit should happen. After parliamentary approval, it awaited Royal Assent from Queen Elizabeth which it was given, as announced on Twitter by Jacob Rees-Mogg, the House of Commons’ leader.
On the second day of House Democrats laying out their case in the U.S. Senate for removing President Donald Trump, there was little sign on Thursday that their arguments had changed any minds among Republican senators who control the chamber. No Republican senators who spoke to reporters during breaks in the proceedings on Wednesday and Thursday said they had heard anything to convince them that Trump’s interactions with Ukraine warranted his removal from office. A handful said they had already made up their minds to acquit their party’s leader.
Their comments underscore that Trump is almost certain to be acquitted in the third presidential impeachment trial in U.S. history. Democrats have expressed concerns that Republicans, who hold 53 of the Senate’s 100 seats, are not keeping an open mind about the evidence they have gathered. Republicans counter that the Democrats have failed to make their case against Trump. Democrats in the House of Representatives have accused Trump of withholding military aid and a White House meeting to pressure Ukraine to investigate a political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden, who is seeking the Democratic nomination to face off against Trump in November’s presidential election.
