LONDON – On Sunday, British food retailers pleaded shoppers to quit panic buying during the coronavirus outbreak stating that buying more than needed will leave others without anything.
Retailers like Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons have come together to request customers via the British Retail Consortium (BRC) to become more considerate in how they shop.
The letter with this plea shall be published in newspapers nationally on Sunday and Monday.
“We understand your concerns but buying more than is needed can sometimes mean that others will be left without. There is enough for everyone if we all work together.”
– Helen Dickinson, BRC CEO
Pictures of Britain’s major supermarkets with shelves empty have been all over social media. People have been bulk buying items like toilet rolls, canned food and dried pasta.
Retailers have been comparing the rush in UK supermarkets to the pre-Christmas rush.
So far, 21 people have died from coronavirus in Britain.
According to Dickinson, food retailers are working alongside the government and suppliers to keep food moving and have been making more deliveries to restock shelves.
Online delivery and click-and-collect services from retailers are running at full capacity.
