British Airways pilots will be subjected to a 50% pay cut to their basic April and May salary as it seeks to cut costs to try to survive the coronavirus crisis.
British Airways agreed to the initial measures with UK-based pilot union BALPA which aims to address “the immediate threat to the business in the face of COVID-19 and the unprecedented impact this is having on the airline”.
A source stated that the pilots’ pay cut would become lesser than 50% based on the agreement, pilots can temporarily suspend their pension contributions.
BALPA denied 50% pay cuts. Discussions are yet to be finalised while BALPA claims that 50% pay cuts for British Airways pilots are wrong.
The cut would be split over a period of three months.
British Airways Chief Executive Officer Alex Cruz last week told staff about plans to cut jobs and ground aircrafts to tackle the coronavirus situation.
