LONDON (UK) – Soon after the government announced that it would impose a 14-day quarantine on travellers from across the Channel because of the increase in coronavirus infections, Britons were hurrying to get back from France on Friday, during summer holidays.
Britain’s government announced late on Thursday gave an estimated 160,000 UK holidaymakers there just a day’s time to get back home to avoid isolating.
One British woman at a service station on the motorway to Calais told, “We’ve changed our plans when we heard the news last night. We decided to head back home a day early to miss the quarantine.”
The new quarantine rules apply to France, which makes for the second most popular holiday destination, when it comes to Britons, the Netherlands and the Mediterranean island of Malta, according to transport minister Grant Shapps.
France, however, highlighted that it would reciprocate.
Britain has implemented strict quarantine rules for people arriving from countries with increasing infection rates.
Shapps told BBC Radio, “Being able to open up some of those things but having to close down travel corridors elsewhere is all part of the same thing.”
He undermined any efforts of special assistance for holidaymakers.
