London: Never in the modern history of mankind has there been so vocal a movement denouncing racism and prejudice against ethnic minority groups. The limp body of a 46-year-old Afro-American that lay on the pavement near the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis, USA, on May 25 weighs heavy on human conscience. Racial injustice has to end by all means and the British Herald has joined the global chorus against racism by dedicating its July-August issue to George Floyd.
Paying tribute to “gentle Floyd” and countless other blacks who have fallen victims to racial violence, British Herald has come out with an edition that has white ink on black paper instead of the other way around. Perhaps, it is the first e-magazine in the world to come out with an edition that is in ‘dark mode’. It has also applied to the Guinness Book of World Records to set a record.
When the ‘gentle giant’ pleaded for life while suffocating under the brutal knee hold of a white police officer in Minneapolis, very few knew that the sickening footage, which was shot by concerned bystanders, would go viral in a matter of minutes, taking the world by storm, literally.
In his moments of immeasurable agony, the words he uttered, “I can’t breathe”, “Mamma” and “They’re going to kill me” still ring in our ears, forcing us to take a look at the vexing issue of skin colour being discriminated against in many walks of life. In fact, “I can’t breathe” became the holy chant of protesters as they rallied in cities around the world seeking justice for Floyd and redressal to the issue of racial prejudice.
Certainly, these are changing times as the protests against racial injustice are rocking cities, sparking debates across the board on the hot button. Such is the force of the moral outrage that action is being taken in several sectors to address this issue that has been festering for a long while. A case in point is fairness cream brand Fair and Lovely deciding to drop ‘Fair’ from its name and replace it with ‘Glow’. Yes, the change has begun and British Herald has joined the bandwagon expressing solidarity for the just cause in a symbolic, yet powerful way.
