LONDON – On Tuesday, the British government set out emergency legislation to intervene in a growing coronavirus outbreak. These emergency measures include giving power to police and immigration officers to keep people detained and place them in isolation to protect the public health system.
“The new measures we will be introducing in the Emergency Coronavirus Bill this week will only be used when it is absolutely necessary and must be timed to maximise their effectiveness.”
– Matt Hancock, Health Minister
The legislation also includes measures to let the recently retired staff of the National Health Service and social workers to get back to work. The legislation will be presented before Parliament on Thursday.
