The Methanol Institute: Will liquid fuels have a role to play in decarbonising the EU?

BRUSSELS  – The Methanol Institute (MI) is hosting a webinar titled “Fit for 55: Key Implications for Liquid Fuels” on October 7 at 1 p.m. HAEC). Speakers from the European Commission, FuelsEurope and OCI / BioMCN will present the role of liquid fuels within the framework of the “Fit for 55” package.

In July, the European Commission announced the “Fit for 55” package, a set of 13 policy initiatives aimed at achieving the European Union’s climate ambition. The amended policy instruments established under these proposals have a significant impact on the future market for liquid fuels. In the webinar, speakers will present their thoughts on the changing regulatory landscape and share their views on the potential improvements needed to meet the target of reducing carbon emissions in the EU.

Renewable, low – carbon liquid fuels , such as methanol, offer immediate climate benefits and a clear path to decarbonization. Their production can be done from various renewable sources, such as solid household waste or renewable electricity, and in the long term allow the progressive replacement of fossil fuels in the road, maritime and air sectors. Numerous studies have shown that despite the fastest possible transition to electric vehicles, carbon neutrality in the EU will require the contribution of renewable and low- content liquid fuels.in carbon. They allow an accelerated energy transition that is expanding to mobility segments that are difficult to electrify, such as transport and long-distance delivery. Important questions have been raised as to the extent to which the “Fit for 55” package recognizes the essential contribution of renewable and low – carbon liquid fuels .

While the continued integration of these fuels will generate climate benefits throughout the transport sector, their role in the EU’s decarbonization path is disputed. Their climate benefits are recognized by the Renewable Energy Directive, but their future in the EU energy mix is threatened by CO2 emissions standards. The package “Fit for 55” it really helps to combustible liquids with low content of carbon to be effective response to climate change? Answer this question and more in the “Fit for 55: Key Implications for Liquid Fuels” webinar.
