Dixons Carphone of UK reports big spurt in first half profits as online business thrives

LONDON (UK) – Electrical retailer Dixons Carphone of the UK has reported a major spurt in first half profit. Its strong online performance has offset the closure of shops during the lockdown.

The group, which is known as Currys and PC World in the UK and Ireland, announced on Wednesday it made an adjusted pretax profit of 89 million pounds ($112 million) in the six months to Oct. 31 compared with 2 million pounds during the same period in 2019.

Dixons makes most of its profits during the second half and it said the outlook remained uncertain. However, trading remained strong in the six weeks to Dec. 12 with electricals like-for-like sales surging 16% despite extensive store closures in Britain as well as in Greece.
