A woman was given life imprisonment for plotting a suicide bomb attack on London’s St Paul’s Cathedral this Easter in support of the Islamic State. She has to serve 14 years behind bars. Safiyya Shaikh, 37, had planned to set off a bomb at the famous cathedral to kill herself and visitors. She also had plans to set a bomb at the hotel where they would have stayed before the attack, said prosecutors.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson appealed to Britons not to misuse their new found freedoms this week as pubs and restaurants reopen. “My message is, let’s not blow it now folks, we’ve done a fantastic job so far in bearing down on this disease, collectively, let’s not blow it now,” he told LBC radio. 

Passengers from the US who are arriving into England will not be exempted from quarantine rules, said Britain’s transport minister Grant Shapps. Replying to a question whether the US would be placed on a ‘red-list’ of countries to which the quarantine rules apply, the minister said: “I’m afraid it will be.”

The United States has put on hold flights for several American diplomats who had planned to return to China later this month. This comes in the wake of Washington failing to strike a deal with Beijing over coronavirus testing and quarantine.

Dismissing criticism of hypocrisy earlier this week for not wearing a face mask, German Chancellor Angela Merkel made her first public appearance wearing one. She arrived at Bundesrat, the upper house of parliament, sporting a black mask marked with EU2020.de.

As many as 20 Saudi officials were tried in absentia by a court in Turkey in a case related to the gruesome murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The incident had sparked outrage across the world and eclipsed the image of the ruler of Saudi Arabia.
