LONDON – The metal industry’s major event, the annual London Metal Exchange Asia Week dinner to take place in Hong Kong has been cancelled and the seminar which was scheduled for the same day has been postponed.

It was supposed to happen on the 6th of May.

LME is owned by Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX) who in 2012, had paid $2.2 billion for the world’s largest metal trading venue.

The death toll from the coronavirus outbreak has reached a number of 1,380.

The dinner was cancelled and the seminar was postponed by LME to ensure “the safety of staff, customers and friends in the metals industry across the region.”

2,000 people were estimated to attend last year’s LME dinner. This year, it was cancelled as many who would have attended decided against going.

“They have clearly been told that there wouldn’t be as many people going. It’s not really a surprise they cancelled.”

The LME week in London happens in October or November and has 2,000 people in attendance for dinner with 600-800 attending the seminar.
