LONDON – Britain’s biggest supermarket group Tesco is set for a restructure of its bakery operations in larger stores- fewer products shall be baked instore.
This move shall put 1,816 workers jobs at risk of redundancy.
Tesco trades from 3,787 stores across Britain and Ireland. The changes are being made due to a shift in consumer tastes with fewer people purchasing the traditional loaves and more wraps, bagels and flatbreads becoming popular among consumers.
Once implemented in May, 217 Tesco stores shall continue to have bakery from scratch, 201 part-baked in-store and 58 Tesco stores shall have pre-prepared deliveries which shall only be finished in-store.
Tesco also attempts to increase traditional loaf alternatives while growing its range with partnerships with small local suppliers.
“Due to some stores doing less scratch baking, as well as the simplified routines these changes will bring, we will unfortunately need fewer colleagues to work in these areas.”
