World Rally cancels Argentina round, to re-start season in Estonia
PARIS (FRANCE) – Organisers of the World Rally Championship (WRC) said ton Thursday that Argentina’s postponed round stood cancelled. Instead, the COVID-hit season would re-start in September in Estonia.
For the first time, the Baltic state of Estonia, which is home of reigning world champion Ott Taenak, has appeared on the WRC calendar. The short-format gravel rally is slated for Sept. 4-6.
According to the revised schedule, the rally will move on to Turkey from Estonia from Sept. 24-27.
Germany will host the rally from Oct. 15-18, with the next leg in Sardinia, Italy on Oct. 29-Nov. 1. The season will come to a close in Japan on Nov. 19-22.
The ongoing discussions could also see Belgium and Croatia hosting rallies.
Before the lockdown, the championship hosted three rounds in Monte-Carlo, Sweden and Mexico.
Sebastien Ogier, who is six times world champion, is leading the standings for Toyota.
Said WRC promoter managing director Oliver Ciesla: “Today’s restart announcement sends a clear signal that the 2020 WRC is back in business.”.
