Washington, Beijing to allow air carriers to double number of flights

WASHINGTON (US) – China and the United States have agreed to allow air carriers to double the number of flights between both countries to eight per week, said the Transportation Department.

According to the department, it will allow four Chinese airlines operating services to the US to double flights to eight a week. This comes as China has permitted US airlines to double flights to the country.

US air carriers had stopped all flights to China following the outbreak of the pandemic and President Donald Trump on Jan. 31 barred nearly all non-US citizens from travelling to the United States from China.

United Airlines said on Tuesday that it will increase its San Francisco to Shanghai flights from two to four a week starting from Sept. 4, while the department said Delta Air Lines could also operate four flights instead of two every week to China.

The US government hopes that China will reinstate full US flights as per their bilateral aviation pact.

The pact allows both countries to operate more than 100 flights a week between China and US.
