HANOI (VIETNAM) – The government appealed to tens of thousands of people who visited a central city to report to disease control centres on Thursday. This comes in the wake of nine new coronavirus cases being confirmed and the nation is scrambling to contain its first outbreak in three months.
Through cellphone text messages, the health ministry urged people who visited Danang from July 1 to report at disease control centres as a new wave of infections has spread to six cities and provinces within six days and they are all linked to the tourist hotspot.
The government said on Thursday that it would conduct mass testing until Saturday among thousands of citizens who visited Danang recently.
From Wednesday midnight, the capital banned large gatherings and ordered bars to be closed. Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung said the city must “act now and act fast”.
“We have to use full force to test all 21,063 returnees,” Chung said on Thursday.
“All must be done in three days.”
With nine new cases, the number of infections has gone up to 42.
