US judge thwarts Commerce Department bid to have WeChat removed from app stores

WASHINGTON (US) – Early on Sunday, a US judge blocked the move of the Commerce Department to remove Chinese messaging app WeChat from Apple and Google stores.

US Magistrate Judge Laurel Beeler in San Francisco said in an order that WeChat users who filed a lawsuit “have shown serious questions going to the merits of the First Amendment claim, the balance of hardships tips in the plaintiffs’ favour.”

It was on Friday that the Commerce Department issued the order after citing national security threats.
