KYIV (UKRAINE) – The country reported as many as 1,106 new cases of the coronavirus in a span of 24 hours. It is the highest daily toll since a record rise on June 26, when it touched 1,109, said Health Minister Maksym Stepanov on Saturday.
Daily infections witnessed a steady rise over the past two months following the gradual easing of curbs in late May.
The minister said that 205 people had been admitted to hospitals. “It means their lives are under threat and we have to understand that this disease is very serious,” he said in a briefing.
The total number of infections rose to 63,929, including 1,590 fatalities. As many as 35,497 patients recovered as of July 25.
Stepanov urged people to adhere to rules that are aimed at curbing the spread of the virus.
The government this week extended a nationwide lockdown until August 31, urging people to wear masks and maintain social distancing norms at restaurants and public places.
The country’s central bank has predicted a slump of 6% in gross domestic product mainly due to coronavirus restrictions this year.
