UK Sellafield nuclear site has its small amount of chemicals disposed
LONDON (UK) – Sellafield Ltd said on Friday that disposal of a small amount of chemicals after a routine inspection is to be done by specialists at its Magnox reprocessing site in northwest England.
The reprocessing plant was evacuated as a safety measure on Thursday. The plant was not functioning during the time, Sellafield Ltd said.
The company said, “Chemical monitoring is undertaken across the site to understand changing chemical states and to inform when and how industrial chemicals should be stored or disposed of.”
“The risk has been identified as a conventional safety issue rather than a nuclear safety risk,” it added.
Sellafield, a former nuclear power generating site had the Magnox plant likely to close this year.
