LONDON (UK) – Britain has received over 1.5 million new claims for welfare payments since it began in mid-March. The government asked people to avoid unnecessary social contact to curb the coronavirus spread.
This increase from last week’s figure of approximately 1.4 million new claims for Universal Credit benefits shows a slowing from last month’s surge. However, it still suggests that the country is on course for a jump in unemployment.
Universal Credit benefits are given to those in work as well as those who have lost their jobs.
