AMSTERDAM (NETHERLANDS) – Dutch police arrested more than 150 people by the third night of unrest in cities across the Netherlands. The violence was triggered by a night curfew aimed at curbing the coronavirus.
The nation’s first curfew since World War Two had a warning by the National Institute for Health (RIVM) regarding a new wave of infections due to the “British variant” of the virus. Despite weeks of decline in new infections, the curfew was imposed.
Dutch news agency ANP said on Tuesday that ten police suffered injuries in the port city of Rotterdam, where 60 rioters were arrested overnight.
In the capital’s east, at least nine people were held following their clash with riot police.
Schools and non-essential shops have been closed down since mid-December, after bars and restaurants were shut two months prior.
The death toll in the Netherlands stands at 13,579, with 952,950 infections to date.
