MELBOURNE (AUSTRALIA) – Sporting face masks, fans returned to the Australian Open on Thursday to watch the semi-finals following the completion of the five-day snap lockdown in Melbourne.
On Thursday, officials of the state of Victoria recorded no new cases of the coronavirus as residents of Melbourne were released from social distancing curbs.
During the snap lockdown, players competed in empty arenas at Melbourne Park. Reduced capacity crowds of 7,477 have been allowed in each of Thursday’s two sessions and the singles finals sessions on Saturday and Sunday.
During the opening week of the tournament, spectators were limited to 30,000 per day until the lockdown was enforced last Saturday.
