The confirmed coronavirus death toll in the United Kingdom rose by 56 within a day to a total of 233, according to the National Health Service on Saturday. 72,818 people had been tested as of 0900 GMT, with 5,018 positive cases which is a rise from 3,983 the previous day.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned that the National Health Service (NHS) may soon be “overwhelmed” by the coronavirus just like the Italian health system. This warning came not long after the UK in the face of rising numbers of deaths. The NHS will have more ventilators and thousands of extra beds and healthcare staff on hand from next week to fight coronavirus after it struck a deal with the independent hospital sector. The first new ventilator prototypes to help the health service handle the coronavirus pandemic have been received by Britain and new machine production should commence shortly, according to housing minister Robert Jenrick. Smiths Group, a British technology firm stated that it was making a ventilator available for other manufacturers to produce as part of a coordinated attempt to tackle the shortage of this life-saving equipment with the increasing spread of coronavirus.
A large earthquake struck near the Croatian capital Zagreb, leaving a teenager critically injured after an apartment building in the city collapsed, the GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences and a hospital official said.
Another minor was badly injured and the quake caused several fires and power blackouts in parts of the capital, hospital and emergency services said.
Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic called on citizens to remain outside their homes amid potential aftershocks. Plenkovic and Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic also appealed for people rushing onto the streets to keep social distances from each other as the country struggles to contain the spread of coronavirus. So far, Croatia has reported 206 cases of the virus and one death.
