PARIS (FRANCE) – TV channel LCI said on Sunday that a 39-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fire in Nantes cathedral that destroyed the stained glass windows and the grand organ.
Citing prosecutor Pierre Sennes, the channel said the police arrested a Rwandan refugee who worked as a volunteer for the cathedral and was tasked with locking up the building on Friday night.
The prosecutor said the man was taken into custody to scrutinise inconsistencies in his schedule.
On Saturday, he said three fires were started in the 15th century cathedral and there had been no signs of a break-in. Authorities said the probe into suspected arson had begun.
The blaze was noticed on Saturday morning and it engulfed the gothic cathedral. It could be brought under control only after several hours. This comes a year after a fire at the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris gutted its roof and main spire.
