LONDON (UK) – British finance minister Rishi Sunak revealed that over 2 million claims for one-off grants amounting to 6 billion pounds, had been made via a scheme to provide self-employed people support during the coronavirus crisis.
“Those people will have the money in their bank accounts within six working days of their claim.”
– Rishi Sunak, British Finance Minister
Launched a week ago, the scheme provides grants of up to 7,500 pounds and is part of the British government’s attempts to soften coronavirus’ blow on the economy.
The centrepiece of the economic policy response to COVID-19, Sunak says, is a programme to pay 80% of the wages of temporarily laid-off employees. So far, 8 million workers have been covered.
