MANILA (PHILIPPINES) – The Philippines on Thursday recorded an increase in coronavirus cases to surpass neighbouring Indonesia. This would make it the country with the highest number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in East Asia.
The Philippines recorded 3,561 new infections on Thursday, thereby making its total confirmed cases to 119,460.
President Rodrigo Duterte announced that a two-week lockdown in and around Manila.
The restrictions came into effect on Tuesday, after a group of doctors and nurses gave strict warnings that the healthcare system could crumble if the number went high.
The Philippines implemented, considered the world’s longest lockdowns in and around the capital, running from mid-March to the end of May.
