LONDON (UK) – National Medical Director of the National Health Service Stephen Powis said that the UK will have done well if it emerges out of the coronavirus crisis with lesser than 20,000 deaths.
Powis was questioned if the UK will be on a similar trajectory like Italy and his response is stated below.
“If it is less than 20,000… that would be a good result though every death is a tragedy, but we should not be complacent about that.”

The National Health Service has been working hard to improve its ICU beyond its typical 4,000-bed capacity.
Operation theatres and recovery areas are being prepared by the NHS for taking in critically ill patients especially in London hospitals and capacity have been doubled. These units have not yet been used to treat patients.
“At the moment, I am confident the capacity is there. We have not reached capacity.”
