PRAGUE (CZECH REPUBLIC) – According to health ministry data on Sunday, the total number of new infections in the country rose to 4,764, above the previous high of 4,737 in April.
As many as 113 new cases were recorded on Saturday bringing the tally to 13,885 from March.
There have been 358 COVID-19 related fatalities in the country which has a population of 10.7 million.
The active cases have gone up as the daily has been above 100 over the past few days, outscoring the number of recoveries. The new cases — many in the industrial north-east where a mine outbreak happened — have so far been milder than before.
As on Saturday, there were 135 people in hospital, which is less than a third of the peak figure of 446 in April.
Ever since the nationwide lockdown was imposed in March, the authorities have vowed to avoid such measures and instead tackle local surge in infections.
