ISTANBUL (TURKEY) – Seventy six of 105 people arrested over protests against President Tayyip Erdogan’s appointment of a rector at one of Turkey’s top universities were released, the Istanbul Governor’s office said on Wednesday.
The office said it is still processing the detentions of 29 people in the city.
Talking against a government ban on demonstrations, students and teachers at Istanbul’s Bogazici University have taken to protests for the last month against Erdogan appointing academic and former political candidate Melih Bulu as rector, which according to them, was not on the lines of democracy.
On Tuesday, hundreds gathered in the city’s Kadikoy district in unity, who were dispersed by the police using pepper spray projectiles and detained some 100 people.
The governor’s office also said 11 people who were detained during protests on Monday were put under house arrest related to a court ruling.
